Guided tissue regeneration membranes for periodontal regeneration--a literature review.

Guided tissue regeneration materials were reviewed in this paper and can be categorized as non-resorbable and bioabsorbable. Both materials have been used extensively in periodontal regeneration with no difference in the clinical outcome. Selection of barrier material depends on resorbability, size of the defect, morphology of the defect, operator preference and patient acceptance.

Scanning electron microscopy of bacterial colonies.

A technique is described for observing bacterial colony growth. Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, and B. cereus var. mycoides were grown on strips of dialysis membrane layered on nutrient agar. Microcolonies of the organisms on strips were fixed in Formalin vapor in situ; the strips then were removed from the agar and secured to scanning microscope specimen stubs without markedly disturbing the cel...

fluoride varnish as root canal sealer: a scanning electron microscopy and bacterial penetration study

introduction: this study was carried out to evaluate the bacterial leakage of root canal fillings when cavity varnish containing 5% fluoride (duraflur) was used as root canal sealer. methods and materials: root canals of 88 straight single-rooted teeth were prepared. eighty teeth were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups ( n =20) and two positive and negative control groups of ten each. ...

Bacterial adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to intraocular lenses: a bioluminescence and scanning electron microscopy study.

PURPOSE To analyze and compare the adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to intraocular lenses (IOLs) made of five different biomaterials (native or heparinized polymethylmethacrylate, silicone, hydrophilic acrylic, or hydrogel) and to detail the different steps and mechanisms of bacterial adhesion to a polymer. METHODS A clinical strain carrying the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus was u...
